Chelonopsis yagiharana (syn. C. moschata) – A late summer to early fall blooming herbaceous perennial with red-purple tubular turtlehead-like flowers emerging axillary. Flowers set horizontally from the stems which rise from about 10 to 20 inches, possibly up to 24 inches in the richest of conditions. Each flower is somewhat reminiscent of foxglove (Digitalis) flowers. Commonly called the Japanese Turtlehead it's easy to please sited in open, dappled or part shade to half sun planted in fertile soil. Dark green opposite leaves, serrated and handsomely veined, the pairs set in a 90 degree alternating pattern on the wiry purple stems are attractive all season on the handsome mounded tuft. This is a neat, clumping perennial. Cutting grown or by division.
